Columbia Insurance Strengthens Its Finance Leadership

New Vice President, Finance and Deputy Chief Financial Officer Named

Matthew Burnett joined the executive team of Columbia Insurance as vice president of finance and deputy chief financial officer on June 22. In this role, Burnett will support the carrier’s financial strategy, strengthen operational performance and help position Columbia for continued, long-term growth.

Burnett brings 30 years of industry experience in building data-driven finance strategies, transforming systems and strategic planning.

“Matthew brings leadership and financial expertise that both fits how we operate today while also influencing where we’re going,” said Todd Ruthruff, Columbia’s president and chief executive officer. “He understands the importance of strong financial discipline, and just as important, he knows how to partner with all stakeholders to get things done the right way.”

Recognized for building high-performing finance teams, Burnett supports practical solutions and values contributing across finance, risk and operations to improve processes.

Burnett said Columbia’s culture and approach to relationships made the opportunity a natural fit. “What excites me the most are the people. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and the culture aligns well with my own leadership style,” Burnett said.

Ruthruff said Burnett’s addition reinforces Columbia’s focus on the future. “We’re building for what’s next, and Matthew will play an important role,” Ruthruff said. “His experience, expertise and partnership-orientation will be highly valuable as we enhance our capabilities toward maximizing success with our agency partners.”

“I'm looking forward to joining an excellent company with a consistent history of profitable growth and a focus on innovation and employee engagement,” Burnett said. “This opportunity feels truly meant to be.”

Burnett joins a strong legacy of financial leadership as demonstrated by Columbia’s recent AM Best upgrade to A/stable. Kelly Klug, Columbia’s senior vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer plans to retire in 2027 after a distinguished tenure with the company.
